Mi primera rueca / My first spinning wheel

Comencé a hilar hace 2 o 3 años, fue tanta mi emoción que compré un paquete de 5-10 kgs de lana con la idea de hacer mis propios estambres y dejar de comprar acrílico que tanto desprecio. Nunca pensé que el proceso de hilarlo sería tan tardado y delicado, solo tenía un huso pequeño que compré en etsy y un par de husos caseros que hice con discos de MDF y barras de madera. No estoy seguro si los errores que cometí fueron por las herramientas que tenía o realmente no tenía idea de lo que hacía, en algunos casos tuve problemas al teñir la lana, la calenté demasiado tiempo y terminé afelpandola, esto es un gran error al intentar hilar porque las fibras están tan apretadas que terminas con los dedos adoloridos de tratar de separarlas, en fin, el proceso fue tan molesto y tardado que terminé guardando mi huso y mis 10 kgs de lana.

I started spinning about 2 or 3 years ago, i was so excited that i bought 10-20 pounds of mill ends from the sheep shed studio to get me started, my idea was to start using my own yarn and stop buying that dreadful acrylic that i hate so much. I never thought the process would be so hard and delicate, i only had a small drop spindle i bough on etsy and a couple handmade spindles i made with MDF disks and wooden rods. I'm not sure if i made so much mistakes because i didn´t had the right tools or it was just that i had no idea what i was doing at all, sometimes i dyed the wool heating it so much and felting it in a little in the process. When i was spinning it the drafting was so difficult that my fingers ended up hurting. There were so much bad experiences that i ended up storing my wool and spindles for years.

Afortunadamente, en vacaciones navideñas del año pasado visitaba mi casa y terminé sin nada que hacer, así que desempaqué mis cosas y encontré una bolsa con 100 grs de alpaca que un miembro de ravelry muy amablemente me regaló, la fibra era tan suave que fue una experiencia totalmente distinta a las que había tenido, tardé bastante en hilarla pero lo logré, por fin tejí algo con un estambre hilado por mi mismo y con esto desperté mis ganas de seguir haciéndolo.

Luckily, last december i was visiting my family and  once i finished my yarn i had nothing to do, so i unpacked my spindles and found a bag of top alpaca some ravelry member kindly gave me, the fiber was so soft and fluffy and it drafted so easily, that it was a completely different experience, it took me a lot of time but i finally made it, i spun my own yarn and knit myself something nice with it.

 A finales de Marzo me dediqué a la cacería de ruecas, busqué en ravelry, en craiglist, ebay e incluso en subastas para la caridad, debía ser una rueca bastante barata ya que además tendría que pagar el envío a México que no es nada barato. Afortunadamente encontré un listado en craiglist de una Ashford Traditional, el dueño no agregaba muchos detalles, solo que estaba completa e incluía algo de lana, pero lo mejor era el precio: 100 dls. intenté contactar al dueño pero nunca lo logré, pero, Andrea un miembro de ravelry me ayudó con el contacto, incluso compró la rueca con su dinero y la envió a su casa en lo que yo realizaba el trámite para realizarle el depósito, y aprovechó para probarla y darle mantenimiento, estas son las primeras fotos que me envió cuando la recibió

After my alpaca experience i couldn´t stop myself and by the end of March i decided i wanted a spinning wheel but they are so expensive i couldn´t afford even the pvc ones, so i started searching on ravelry, craiglist, ebay and goodwill auctions for a used one, it had to be something cheap just to get me started because i had to pay the shipping to Mexico, and it isn´t cheap at all. I finally was lucky enough to find  a craiglist ad of an Ashford Traditional single drive, the seller didn´t included a lot of details, only that it was complete and it included some wool (and a couple pictures) for 100dls which is an excellent price. I tried to get in contact with the seller but i wansn´t able to, then Andrea a fellow Ravelry member helped me to get in contact with the seller, she even bought the whell and send it to her house, and while it was there she gave it some TLC, and she sent me these pictures:

La lana en la primera foto fue la que el dueño agregó al paquete, algunos de los carretes en la segunda foto tuvieron que ser pegados, y las varillas y maderas extras son del lazy kate que venía originalmente con la rueca, Andrea fue tan linda que además de darle mantenimiento, arregló el lazy kate. Unos días después recibí mi primera rueca, es algo vieja (tenemos la misma edad) pero se encuentra en excelente estado, y lo mejor es que resultó una ganga total.

The wool in the first picture is what was included in the sale (about a pound of finn top roving), the wheel was oiled and some of the bobbins had to be glued since the were pretty loose, the parts in the second picture are the remaining of a lazy kate (which were included with the wheels), Andrea was very kind to fix it adding a wood base. About a week later i got my first wheel, it´s and old model (we are the same age) but she´s in excellent shape, and it was a real bargain!!.
